CMT teachers are awesome. They’ve performed all over the world, are current music therapists, elementary school teachers…and they love what they do. They are passionate about music and, more importantly, about supporting your child's musical journey.

 

 

 

Esther Winter

Owner/Director/Teacher

 

Esther is an actor, singer, dancer, choreographer, director, and mom to four beautiful children. She began teaching Music Together in 2002 and founded Canalside Music Together in the fall of 2003. Esther has performed on stages throughout the country such as Main State Theatre (Ain't Misbehavin'), North Carolina Theatre (Dreamgirls), and Sacramento Music Circus (The Music Man, Pirates of Penzance). She was also in the West End cast of Show Boat directed by Harold Prince. Locally, Esther has appeared on the stages of JCC CenterStage, Blackfriars Theatre, Webster Theatre Guild, Lady Parts Theatre Company, Method Machine, and Out of Pocket Theatre Company. She has also appeared in various local commercials (sometimes even a billboard!). Although Esther grew up in Los Angeles, she has been an east coaster for most of her adult life, receiving her BFA in Musical Theatre from Syracuse University and living in NYC as a professional actor for thirteen years. Esther holds Music Together Certification Level II status for outstanding achievement in teaching, musicianship, program philosophy, and parent education. She is also a Music Together teacher trainer.

I found this question almost impossible to answer as there always seems to be some sort of soundtrack playing in my head, but “Sailing” by Christopher Cross always makes me smile and immediately relaxes me

If you were an animal, you’d be:

An eagle. They’re powerful. Plus, flying

Your favorite food is:

The cheeseburger at Restaurant Good Luck. Never disappoints

Most people don’t know that you:

Worked at Christie’s Auction House in NYC for three years setting up auctions for photography, European paintings, contemporary art and sculpture. I learned so much

When you were a child, you once:

Thought it would be fun to run around the house blindfolded. I was mistaken.

You will always dance to:

Pretty much anything but “Love on Top” by Beyonce is one of my top five

You remember:

Putting on shows in my backyard along with my two childhood buddies (hi Laurie and Darrell!). We’d invite the entire neighborhood and serve refreshments. Our favorite performance was singing and acting out West Side Story. There were only three of us, so it was tricky, but we made it work

 

 

 

Megan Colombo

Teacher

 

Megan is a local performer, arts marketer, writer, and educator. Megan received her Bachelor of Music in Music Education from Nazareth College in 2015. When not at CMT, she works as the Marketing & Outreach Manager at Blackfriars Theatre, and as a music adjudicator for RBTL's Stars of Tomorrow program. A regular performer in Rochester's theatre scene, she has performed in numerous productions at JCC CenterStage and Blackfriars. As a writer, her work has been selected for Writers and Books/Geva's 2 Pages 2 Voices Festival and Rochester Fringe Festival's 24 Hour Play Festival (2017 & 2018). She performed regularly with the Nazareth College Opera Workshop while in school, and attended Si Parla Si Canta - a six week Italian language and opera program in Urbania, Italy. She resides happily in the Laurelton neighborhood, and is grateful to be a part of the Canalside Music Together team!

That Kristin Wiig is my COUSIN!

When you were a child, you once:

Got laryngitis the day of my big 6th grade winter voice recital. My solo was all picked out: I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus. Refusing to NOT have my moment in the *sun* - I made the whole audience endure that song, WITH laryngitis.

You will always dance to:

“R E S P E C T” by Aretha Franklin

You remember:

Watching my dad make the set for my first ever musical in 4th in grade. It was The Gondoliers by Gilbert & Sullivan (I went to the COOLEST elementary school ever) and my dad constructed the boat that got pulled on and off stage. He made it in our garage and I'll never forget 4th grade Megan feeling so good about LIFE (being in the COOLEST musical at the COOLEST elementary school with the COOLEST Dad ever!)

 

 

 

Leah Creary

Teacher

 

Leah Creary has been making music for most of her life, starting piano lessons at 8 and voice lessons at 14.  She then went on to Westminster Choir College, where she received her Bachelor's Degree in Musical Theater.  In addition to being a Music Together teacher, Leah is also a Board-Certified Music Therapist, obtaining her graduate degree from Nazareth College.  She works both at Rochester Psychiatric Center and as a private practice therapist when she's not teaching at Music Together.  She is so happy to be part of the CMT team and can't wait to make music with all of you!

If you were an animal, you’d be:

I'd like to be someone's dog--they live the good life!

Your favorite food is:

Anything Italian.

Most people don't know that you:

Listen to Taylor Swift and Beyonce at the gym.

When you were a child, you once:

Gave my brothers a haircut when my mom wasn't looking.

You will always dance to:

Classic soul music, especially anything by Aretha Franklin.

You remember:

My audition to take voice lessons when I was 13. That day changed my life!

 

 

Philip Detrick

Teacher

 

Philip Detrick has been involved with music for almost his entire life. While growing up in Iowa, he sang in church, was in choir through his senior year of college, played saxophone in band, and was and still is involved with many musicals. He received his Bachelors Degree in Musical Theatre Performance from Waldorf College in 2016. While at Waldorf, Philip was involved with the main choir and the smaller vocal ensemble, Schola Cantorum. Previous to Music Together, Philip spent time working with BOCES-2 as a para professional teacher's aide. Philip is now locally involved in the Rochester theatre scene, having performed with multiple theatres in his short time here. Philip is extremely excited to be a part of the CMT family!

If you were an animal, you’d be:

A cat. Easily.

Your favorite food is:

Cheeseburger and fries will never fail me.

Most people don't know that you:

Are extremely indecisive, which made this answer very difficult for me.

When you were a child, you:

Walked into my first day of kindergarten and immediately fainted from excitement to not be in preschool.

You will always dance to:

Dancing in the Dark by Bruce Springsteen.

You remember:

Always listening to country music as a child, but my dad never sang. One day in the car, "When the Sun Goes Down" by Kenny Chesney, my favorite song at the time came on and my dad exclaimed "UH OH. WHO KNOWS THIS SONG??" He started singing and I remember smiling real wide at the moment.

 

 

 

Maggie MacArthur

Teacher

 

Maggie became a registered Music Together® teacher while she completed her Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood education at UConn. She received her Masters degree in Music Therapy from Nazareth College and completed her Music Together Certification Level I training. Currently, Maggie is a music therapist for the Brockport Central School District. She plays guitar, violin and piano. Maggie lives in Fairport with her husband and son.

 

 

 

Tara O'Brien

Teacher

 

Tara is a board certified music therapist and a registered Music Together teacher with Certification Level I training. She received a B.S. in Music Therapy and a B.A. in Psychology from the State University of New York at Fredonia. While at Fredonia, Tara served as a teaching assistant for an Early Childhood Music Pedagogy course, giving music classes in the community to typical preschool students and preschool students with developmental disabilities. Tara is currently working as the music therapist for the Monroe #1 BOCES Extended School Year program. She plays the piano, guitar, ukulele, and various percussion instruments. Tara completed her Music Together training in New York City and taught in Fredonia, NY. She is thrilled to join the Canalside Music Together team.

Tried doing somersaults down the stairs

"Material Girl" by Madonna (I don’t consider myself to be one, but man is that song catchy)

You remember:

My Music Together teacher training weekend. We started by moving around the room singing "This Train" while playing egg shakers. I was hooked right away!

 

 

 

Michelle Wagner

Teacher

 

Michelle received a Bachelor of Music in Music Education and Masters of Education from Nazareth College with concentrations in choral conducting and child vocal development.  She is a registered Music Together teacher with Certification Level I training. Additionally, Michelle holds a Kodaly Level 1 Certification.  Before the birth of her first child she taught Vocal/General Music and Chorus at the Canandaigua Primary/Elementary School for nine years.  Michelle currently serves as the Secretary of the Brooks Hill Elementary School PTA Board, is the Co-Director of the Brooks Hill Theatre Company and volunteers as a Religious Education Catechist and Cantor for her family's parish. Michelle and her husband have two daughters and reside in Fairport.

I find my favorite song truly depends on the place I find myself in in my life and has varied greatly over the years.  My mantra song for “adulting” has been “Break My Stride” (Wilder)

If you were an animal, you'd be:

I have often wished to be my cat....snoozing in a warm patch of sun

Your favorite food is:

CHOCOLATE (did you have to ask?)

Most people don't know that you:

Lived for a summer in Germany as an exchange student

When you were a child, you once:

I desperately wanted to be the voice of a Disney character
